Norbit Wins Worst Actor, Worst Film

Directed by Brian Robins and starring Eddie Murphy, Norbit is a comedy about life. Eddie Murphy plays the role of a well-mannered guy named Norbit raised in an orphanage run by Asian manager, Mr. Wong. Norbit grows up and marries an overweight woman named Rasputia.

CinemaBlend.com reports that the movie is full of scenes where Murphy-Norbit is very sympathetic and funny.

All the cliché fat jokes that permeate these skinny comedian in a female fat suit movies are there, and they haven’t gotten funnier. You can only laugh at a fat woman breaking a bed while having sex so many times. Luckily, there’s more to the film than flab mockery. It also makes fun of Asian people. Despite that, there are a few decent laughs in Norbit. Eddie’s just too good for the film to completely fail. Imagine what he might have done with a decent script.

The scenes in the movie develop fast, and soon Norbit falls in love with the lovely Kate. According to commonsense media, the bottom line of the movie is “a pointless exercise in gross-out humor that will probably offend just about everyone at some point.”

And along with the many, many jokes about Rasputia’s large body (one is lifted straight from Date Movie, using Kelis’ song “Milkshake” as bouncy soundtrack), she serves another function, too: scheming with her brothers and Kate’s rapscallion fiancé Deion (Cuba Gooding Jr.) to steal the smaller woman’s money and turn the orphanage into a “titty bar.”

Black Voices Blogs reports
that Norbit recently received eight Razzie Awards, including Worst Film and Worst Actor of the Year.
