The Visitor
In a world of six billion people, each of us views life differently. This is the main point made by the upcoming movie, The Visitor, set to release next month.
Directed by Tom McCarthy and starring Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira, and Hiam Abbass, the film details the life of sixty-two-year-year-old academic Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) who is tired of writing and teaching. Vale questions his existence and life. However, his college sends him to a conference in Manhattan.
Vale is surprised when he finds that a young couple, Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and Zainab (Danai Gurira), have taken residence in his apartment. Vale becomes a good friend to Terek, and as their friendship deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall apart.
However, when Terek gets arrested as an undocumented immigrant, Vale feels obliged to give him a hand. At the end of the movie, Vale develops a long-term relationship with Terek’s beautiful mother, and the whole world begins to have a new reflection in his eyes.
M & C reports that Vale becomes “the de facto link to any chance of freedom” for Terek.
“The Visitor” is Walter Vale’s story, a widowed and burned out college professor played by the veteran character actor Richard Jenkins. Walter strikes up a friendship with a young immigrant couple, Tarek and Zainab, who are occupying his vacant apartment. Tarek is caught without the right papers and is put into a detention center in Queens.
